Neonatal Immunization

The 1st International Neonatal Vaccination Workshop was held March 2-4, 2004, in Virginia to explore the immunology, safety, and strategies to expand protection of neonates against vaccine preventable diseases. The participants found it difficult to compare studies conducted in different settings, and critical information was lacking.

One of the conclusions of the Workshop was that vaccine trials in neonates will require standardization of information. The Brighton Collaboration was asked by the World Health Organization (WHO) to take on the task of developing a template of information required for vaccine trials among neonates (and infants), including potential adverse events following immunization. A neonatal working group of international experts in vaccinology, immunology, and infectious diseases has been set up to take on this work.

The working group members work through teleconferences and email to arrive at a case definition document through literature review and group consensus. The group has a Team Leader and Coordinator to lead and assist in the development process. The minutes of teleconferences are posted for public access after group approval to ensure that the process is transparent.

Hans Speigel is the Team Leader and Coordinator who leads and assists in the development process.
