Responsibilities and Tasks of Participants
Participants
All participating individuals and organizations in the Brighton Collaboration shall work together efficiently towards the achievement of the Collaboration’s mission, its annual goals, and objectives. All participants provide all labor, equipment, materials, and supplies to support the work in accordance with the respective responsibilities and tasks listed below.

Steering Committee
Members of the Steering Committee:
- carry out the mission of the Collaboration.
- determine the strategic goals and objectives of the Collaboration.
- set policies and process of the Collaboration.
- monitor the growth of the Collaboration.
- hire Brighton Collaboration Coordinators, and provide ongoing support and guidance.
- inform others about the Collaboration.
- set up contacts to enhance participation in the Collaboration.
- promote collaboration with other organizations.
- encourage the global use of «Brighton» case definitions and guidelines.
- ensure adequate resources to carry out the mission of the Collaboration.
- review and approve the budget and funding proposals.
- set annual performance measures for the success of the Collaboration.
- attend in-person Steering Committee meetings at least once a year.
- participate in monthly teleconference meetings of the Steering Committee.
- review all pertaining documents prior to Steering Committee meetings.
- review and comment on meeting minutes, take on assigned action items.

General Coordinators
The General Coordinators work together to:
- support the Steering Committee in achieving the Collaboration’s mission and its annual goals and objectives.
- develop and implement policies, process, and strategic plans.
- oversee the structure and process of the Collaboration.
- identify the need for reorganization and recommend changes.
- determine the need for new positions.
- hire staff, and provide ongoing support and guidance.
- participate in regular teleconferences and in-person meetings of staff.
- develop and implement strategies to increase participation in the Collaboration.
- interface between the Steering Committee and other participants in the Collaboration.
- develop and implement work plans for participants.
- increase efficiency of the overall process and harmonization of outcomes by coordinating work across and within projects.
- develop strategies for implementation of «Brighton» documents.
- measure and promote the global acceptability and use of «Brighton» documents through surveys and evaluation studies.
- develop and implement plans to distribute information about the Collaboration.
- establish relations with other organizations.
- recommend the annual budget and long-term business plan.
- develop and submit funding proposals.
- evaluate annual performance of the Collaboration.
- attend in-person Steering Committee meetings at least once a year.
- prepare monthly teleconference meetings of the Steering Committee.
- prepare minutes of all Steering Committee meetings and follow up on action items.
- provide monthly progress reports to the Steering Committee.

Scientific Coordinator
The Scientific Coordinator:
- assists the General Coordinators to ascertain that the work within the Collaboration is being carried out in accordance with the policies and process of the Collaboration.
- sees that the objectives of an assigned Working Group are met within set timelines.
- facilitates Working Group volunteers to work together efficiently.
- prepares all teleconference calls of the assigned Working Group.
- prepares minutes of the assigned Working Group meetings and follow up on action items.
- provides monthly progress reports to the General Manager.
- participates in regular teleconferences of the Steering Committee.
- measures the global acceptability and use of «Brighton» documents through surveys.
- sees to the timely preparation of «Brighton» documents.
- develops surveys for review of «Brighton» documents.
- participates in the analysis of surveys and presents results to the General Coordinators.
- sees to the finalization of documents for dissemination.

General Manager
The General Manager:
- supports the Brighton Collaboration Coordinators in the day-to-day operations of the Collaboration.
- develops position descriptions for new staff.
- develops and revises a budget plan, and prepares funding proposals.
- prepares progress reports for funding agencies.
- compiles monthly progress reports by working group coordinators for submission to the Brighton Collaboration Coordinators.
- sets up and prepares regular teleconference and in-person meetings of staff.
- assembles information about progress from the General Coordinators and Working Group Coordinators to distribute to all participants.
- sees to the correspondence of the Secretariat and maintains contact databases.
- maintains the «Brighton» library.
- assists in survey analysis, preparation, and dissemination of results to participants.
- sees to the technical finalization of documents for distribution.
- sees to editing and updating the Website of the Collaboration.

Working Group Coordinators
The Working Group Coordinators
- ascertain that the work within the Working Groups is being carried out in accordance with the policies and process of the Collaboration.
- see that the objectives of the Working Groups are met within set timelines.
- facilitate Working Group volunteers to work together efficiently.
- prepare all teleconference and in-person meetings of Working Groups.
- prepare minutes of all Working Group meetings and follow up on action items.
- provide monthly progress reports to the General Manager.
- participate in regular teleconferences and in-person meetings of staff.
- see to the completeness and availability of relevant literature for review by the Working Groups.
- see to the timely preparation of «Brighton» documents.
- develop surveys for review of «Brighton» documents.
- participate in the analysis of surveys and present results to Working Groups.
- see to the finalization of documents for dissemination.

Working Group Volunteers
Working Groups volunteers within their respective Working Group:
- respond to discussions initiated by email and participate in monthly teleconferences.
- address action items arising from each call.
- agree on a team leader, who chairs discussions and prepares draft documents.
- may arrange travel and other related activities needed for in-person meetings.
- make an inventory of existing case definitions and guidelines by means of literature review.
- assess the results and develop draft case definitions and guidelines based upon the review.
- adjust a survey for evaluation of «Brighton» documents by the Reference Group.
- recommend and contact individuals and organizations to serve as Reference Group volunteers.
- revise draft definitions and guidelines according to comments from the Reference Group.
- monitor new information derived from implementation and vaccine trials to periodically update a «Brighton» document.

Reference Group Volunteers
With the support of the Brighton Collaboration Coordinators, participants of the Reference Group will:
- enroll in the Brighton email list to be notified about the availibility of draft documents for review.
- review draft documents and complete a corresponding survey on the website including questions pertaining to the comprehensiveness and usefulness of definitions, and case scenarios for testing reliability of the definitions.
- complete up to 15 surveys per year. Surveys are typically open for 2-3 months and take approx. 2 hours to complete.
- be available for discussions via teleconference or email.
- assist with implementation and use of finalized documents for all immunization safety purposes.
- report on experience with implementing «Brighton» documents.

- participates in regular teleconferences and in-person meetings of staff.
- develops and implements study protocols for evaluation of case definitions and guidelines in clinical vaccine safety trials and surveillance systems.
- conducts studies and analyses results.
- shares and discusses study protocols with other research groups.
- keeps track and follows up with evaluation studies of other research groups.

Global Implementation Group Coordinator
The Global Implementation Group Coordinator
- develops appropriate strategies to create awareness of the availability of «Brighton» documents for potential users.
- educates users about the benefit of use, benefit of standardization, scientific validity, costs and application of «Brighton» documents.
- facilitates access by implementing dissemination strategies.
- monitors global use of «Brighton» documents.
- provides monthly progress reports to General Manager.
- participates in regular teleconferences and in-person meetings of staff.

Communication Specialist
The Communication Specialist
- edits «Brighton» documents for dissemination.
- develops «Brighton» handbook (printed set of standardized case definitions for AEFI and guidelines for data collection, analysis, and presentation).
- develops educational material for implementation.
- edits «Brighton» website information before posting.
